Sony’s PS3 Ad Campaign Not Working?

Sony has been running a lot of ads lately about the PlayStation 3.  They’ve covered everything from playing high resolution Blu-ray movies to playing exclusive games like Uncharted 2. Let’s quickly review a few of them.

1.  It Does Unbelievable HD Entertainment

2. It Only Does Blu-ray Movies

3. It Only Does Great Games

4. It Only Does Uncharted 2

One theme throughout these ads is very prevalent. The PlayStation 3 does everything but be a social gaming machine. No mention of Twitter nor their newly announced support for Facebook Connect. Now how important is Social Media to these gaming machines? My friend Ryan recently blogged about how 10% of the ENTIRE Xbox Live User Base registered their Facebook Account with the system in the first week.  Those kind of numbers can’t be ignored and sadly I think Sony is finally starting to pay the price.

Console Sales Numbers just released for November and Sony is back into third place of the major consoles.  In October Sony was sitting pretty with their recent price drop outselling the Xbox 360 by over 15%, but now the price point is even and Sony is back to what it knows Games and Blu-ray.  If I was Sony I would be very worried.

This was supposed to be Sony’s quarter to really dig into Nintendo and Microsoft’s lead in the console race and it has not happened nearly at the level it should’ve.  They’ve launched a plethora of Triple AAA titles such as Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted 2, and God of War Collection, but it just hasn’t moved the needle.  Exclusive titles nowadays are not so common due to development costs skyrocketing.  Companies like Take Two Interactive and Electronic Arts are having to make games for every platform to recoup development costs and to ensure as many units as possible go out the door.  That being said you have to distinguish your console and Sony has simply failed on all fronts.

But What About Blu-ray?

At $299 the PlayStation 3 is one heck of a Blu-ray player, but what stops a consumer from signing up for Netflix and watching HD movies on demand?  Though the quality is slightly less, it is high enough quality that 99% of consumers dont care. Microsoft knew this and signed NetFlix to an exclusive agreement with the online streaming limiting Sony to having to offer it’s consumer discs to stream movies.

But They Do Have Facebook Connect

Sure they do, but nobody knows this.  It’s not anywhere on the box.  It’s nowhere on TV.  Unlike Microsoft who is running constant ads during prime time featuring Facebook, Netflix and Twitter.

I’m a huge fan of Sony. I proudly show everyone my PlayStation 3 when they come to my home, but it’s hard to not be a little disheartened when your console is in a distance third, not outselling any of the major consoles at holiday with superior titles. Good luck Sony, I’m not even sure God of War III and Gran Turismo 5 can save you.

The Ten Things I’m excited about in November

Over the next two weeks I’m going to go through the 10 things I’m most excited about for this coming November.  Let’s start with #10

#10  Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (November 10th Release Date)

The sequel to 2007’s game of the year.  It’s got everything the original had and more including more perks, better graphics and a more robust single player mode.  I can’t remember a game that captivated me like Modern Warfare did, I found it hard to put down and still am amazed by the fluidity of the game.  The Frame Rate always felt lightning quick especially nowadays where games seem to be less smooth in order to have better graphics.

Transferring SingStar songs to a new Playstation 3/Slim/PS3`

If you are an owner of a new PlayStation you have probably tried to either redownload your SingStar songs to the new PlayStation or have tried the Backup and Restore process when moving to a new unit.  Sadly neither will work.  Sony puts copy protection on all SingStar songs that are downloaded prohibiting them to be download to anymore than one PlayStation.

Luckily I have found a way to transfer your SingStar songs from your old PlayStation 3 and onto your brand new PlayStation Slim.

1.  Deactivate your old PlayStation 3.  To do this plug in the system and via the XMB go under PlayStation Network and select Account Management.  Choose to activate a system.  Inside there will be a deactivate option.  Make sure to deactivate both Video and Video Games privileges.  This is going to be imperative for when you talk to Sony on the phone.

2.  Once you have deactivated your PlayStation 3 you will need to call Sony Customer service.  The number is 1877-971-7669.  When a customer service rep comes on make sure to be very clear with them what you are doing.  Explain to them that you bought a new PlayStation 3 and want to be able to redownload your SingStar songs to your new unit.

3.  They are most likely going to tell you that this is not possible.  Mention to them you read online that if you deactivate your old PlayStation 3 and give your new model # to a customer service Rep that they will eventually be able to be redownloaded.  At this point the representative will explain to you that they have to send the request to Sony Europe for approval and it could take up to a week.

4.  They will not send you an email or anything when this is done.  You will just need to constantly log into your SingStar account on the new system and check under Previous Downloads.  To get to this screen you log into the SingStar Online Store and look across the bottom at the shortcut keys.  I believe the square button will bring up previous downloads.  Click on one of your songs and if it starts downloading you are golden.

Good luck and send me a message on Twitter if you have any questions.

When buying a Video Game for $60 isn’t enough

Namco today officially announced the launch of Tekken 6 on all major video game platforms.  As a PlayStation 3 owner I’ve grown accustomed to paying $59.99 for Video Games and justify it by saying I’ll play this for a long time it is well worth the money.  However, in a bad economy you start making sacrifices like renting games instead of buying or just waiting until they go on Amazon Gold Box.

Even the sales of Video Games were down in May to a level not seen since August 2007.  So to my surprise today a majority of sites have started covering the launch of Namco’s Tekken 6 Special Edition bundle.  For $150 hard earned dollars you get the Tekken 6 video game, a wireless joystick and a few extra goodies.

Seriously in this economy you are launching a collectors edition that is officially the most expensive Video Game launched since the Neo Geo?  I understand the video game manufactures trying to squeeze some extra money out of the die hard players during this down turn, but this bundle to me is simply shocking.  For $150 I can get a nice iPod for my visits to the gym, register my car for another year or I can play Tekken 6 with my wireless joystick.

Do yourself a favor and pay $59.99 for the regular edition of the game.
