In the “Stream” Marketing for LinkedIn Premium

We see a newsfeed in a majority of the websites/apps we interact with.  Most popular probably being Facebook’s, with its unique ability to let uses play videos, comment in real time, like posts, etc.

Over the last few years we’ve seen LinkedIn up it’s game in the stream space by mailing great weekly updates about your network and even greeting you with a Newfeed of your network’s activity on log in.

Recently (just before the IPO) LinkedIn offered a majority of it’s user base a free month of LinkedIn Premium.  Essentially for $19.99 a month you can go deeper into your networks contacts, send email through their system and sort contacts differently.  It’s great, but what I found most interesting was how they marketed this free trial.

1.  Email

This email is just great. It’s not heavy so it loads lightning quick on your mobile or desktop client. It’s informative and the call to action is very clear.

2.  In the Stream Marketing

When a user logs into LinkedIn they are inserting in your stream an update on who in your network has upgraded to LinkedIn Premium.  The best part for me is the language of “Find our why?”.  It creates a curiosity about why have they upgraded it? What does it do?

I look forward to seeing more of this over time.

The Virality of Facebooks “new” Profile Pages

Tonight Facebook rolled out their new profile pages and the sheer number of people upgrading to the opt in page is astounding.  The feature has been live since 5pm pacific and in just 40 minutes 23 people in my network have already upgraded.

How is Facebook Getting People to upgrade?

They are putting banners across any profile page you visit announcing the feature and giving you the option of upgrading.  They are also publishing to your newsfeed all of your friends who have upgraded.  In a few hours I’ll update the post with how many more of the people in my network who have upgraded.

Dr. Dre Meets Facebook

Dr. Dre has been working on his followup to Chronic 2001 called Detox for nearly Ten Years.  There have been constant rumors its coming, but every year it continues to slip.  Well fast forward to just a few weeks ago and all of the Sudden the first single Kush appeared on drdre.com.

What was interesting about this was not the song…which felt like usual Dr. Dre (piano, rhymes written by someone else, snoop, etc), but the fact to listen to the song you must Connect with Facebook.

After you connected with Facebook your feed was populated with the Song, an image of the cover and it looks like the Application information states Universal Music Group.

The minute the user connects via Facebook the song starts playing.  Now how has the song done since release?

Sadly not too well.  Despite all the excitement of Dre returning it seems like iTunes fans have moved on to crap like Katy Perry Fireworks.  Kush is sitting at #28 and the highest I ever saw it was #20.

If You Could Change One Thing About Facebook Places

If I could change one thing about Facebook Places I would allow users to pin locations to photos currently within the Facebook Universe. Right now their isnt a whole lot to be had on Facebook Places pages for business’
Facebook Places for Apture
But imagine if you could pin the location of photos already within Facebook to Places locations. Instantly the social graph would start associating content with places not just people. In the future we’ll obviously see Facebook tap into the meta data smartphones are pinning on photos (location, but for the millions of photos already on Facebook) this would certainly be valuable.

If you could change one thing about Facebook Places what would it be?
