Facebook, Bud Light and their In The Can Viral Video

I’ve written about Facebook before regarding Fan Pages and Relationship Status, but today’s integration with Bud Light might just be my favorite.

Here is the video from YouTube

I got sent this video via a direct message on Facebook and proceeded to have a discussion with my brother about it, but what is interesting is the video player supports becoming a fan of Bud Light while it is playing.

Not only is the video engaging, but instantly Bud Light can convert you to a fan of their product.  Even after you have finished watching the video Bud Light is going to be able to reach out to you via your News Feed all because you wanted to get it “In the Can”.  This player is independent of Bud Light and could be used by every Brand that shares their videos on Facebook.  Brave to the FB team, this type of engagement/branding is going to continue to allow them to print money.

Facebook’s Events tool is disappointing

Just this week I was instant messaged about an event on Facebook that I had not replied to.  I had totally forgotten about the event and was not given a reminder of it.  Facebook why do you do such a great job about creating a rich social stream around my friends and colleagues but drop the ball when it comes to Events.

Currently in Facebook I have two quick links to events.

1.  Requests

In the upper right hand corner of the screen next to the 50 million invites to Mafia Wars and Updates from Fan Pages.

2.  Bottom Toolbar

I am given a shortcut to chat, photos, events, birthdays etc on the bottom of the facebook page

What bothers me is why doesn’t Facebook leverage my News Feed to keep me updated on Events.  Wether I have RSVP’d or if they are Private I want to be aware that the event is either coming up or to remind me that I have not RSVPD.  Flow the invite into my NewsFeed with a message such as you have not RSVPD for the event and it’s in two days and give me YES, NO and MAYBE buttons.

Another issue I have with Facebook Events.  I spend the great majority of my time when browsing the web on my phone and the Facebook Mobile Application does not support displaying Highlights which occasionally will display an event if a few of your friends are also going to the event.  So I either need to actively search out Events in the Facebook Application or I have no way of being reminded I have an event coming up.  I hate EVITE, when I get an invitation from them I cringe so Facebook please add Event reminders to my News Feed.

How Facebook is Pushing Engagement Even When It Comes To Relationships

My buddy Ryan got married this weekend.  Upon returning from the Wedding his Wife updated her profile to announce her marriage to Ryan.

This is common in Social circles a sort of right of passage that you are truly married when you update your Facebook status.  However, what is fascinating here is the photo Facebook is showing in the NewsFeed because that is not Anette’s profile photo.

How Did It Choose the Photo?

What Facebook must’ve done is first look for a photo of the two of them and the only way to decipher that is via the tagging system that has become widely popular.  Below is the original photo with the tags.

But Why That Photo?

This photo was selected because of engagement.  This photo obviously was wildly popular simply looking at the comments.  11 of them.

Facebook knew this photo contained both Ryan and Anette by the tags and they even did the work to see what the most commented photo was containing the both of them.  Simply amazing and a true demonstration of how even the little details mean a whole lot.  I hope my announcement photo is as good as theirs.
