Prediction #2 for 2011 - iPad remains at 1024 x 768 resolution for the entire year :)

There have been many rumors about the iPad doubling its screen resolution to 2048 x 1536 pixels.  I do not believe this will happen for a few reasons.

1.  Cost. A display of that caliber at 9.7 inches simply doesn’t exist in a form thats affordable.  A display with nearly this many pixels sells from Apple for $999

2.  Power. To push graphics and motion on a screen of this resolution would take an insane amount of horsepower.  To get an idea lets take a look at Tom’s Hardware and gauge how the latest ATI graphics card treats a game at this resolution.  As you’ll see it can’t even deliver a consistent 60 frames per second experience.

3.  No Incentive to Deliver. Apple right now is in the drivers seat when it comes to the tablet business.  They have sold nearly 15 million, competitors arent even shipping yet and they’ve lined up developers in bunches.  Their focus at this point is growing the reach of the iPad not delivering something so bleeding edge the price goes up.

4.  It’s all about the consumer. Apple’s focus is on delivering features and products users want.  A beautiful screen is a nice to have, but we won’t see the true difference until they deliver it, so for now they’ll focus on adding video cameras and improving the smoothness at which games and animations can happen.  You ever felt an app that runs at 60 frames per second.  It just feels so much better.

Technology meets the Baby

I’m always fascinated by unique ways technology is now being used in the mobile space.  You have Square who allows virtually anyone to accept credit card payments, Facebook Places which allows me to see Apture CEO @TristanHarris made it safely to New York, but one use really struck a chord with me tonight…watching a baby sleep on your iPad.

Here I am sitting in the living room at @ryanspoon’s house writing this blog post and on his iPad using an application Streamer you can have a peak into the other room to see how his son Dillion is doing.  I understand there are plenty of applications to do this, but just the idea of it is so darn powerful.  You can be anywhere in the world and see how your child is doing without needing to call, email or contact anyone.

We’ve come so far from the world of baby monitors that used batteries and had limited distances.

HTML 5 Video Tag +The iPad = Life For Older Machines

Since the launch of the iPad there have been sites converting layouts and content to a compatible format.  What that means is they need to remove anything Adobe Flash since the iPad controversiality is not supporting Flash at all.

Steve Jobs has been quoted as saying “Flash is a CPU Hog” which some Adobe fan boys have taken offense to.

Well thank god Apple is doing this because as a side benefit those users out there on older mac hardware may have just caught a break.  I recently visited ESPN.com on my dad’s Imac G5 1ghz machine and formally video would play horribly dropping frames, audio cutting out and sometime seven crashing.

After the launch of the iPad video played smooth on ESPN.com, yet it looked exactly the same.  My hunch is ESPN detects if a compatible browser that supports the <video> tag is visiting the site (Safari, FireFox or Google Chrome) it displays the video in HTML 5 format.

Flash has historically been a real problem on the mac, which they are claiming to have fixed with Flash 10.1, but sadly any mac owners on older powerpc hardware won’t notice a difference.  With HTML 5 at least the web can be tolerable for these owners.
