UFC Undisputed 2010 and Perez Hilton’s Goss ‘n’ Sass

UFC Undisputed 2010

The game officially came out this week.  I’ve previously covered the last version calling it the next Madden and I just might be right.  This latest version had over 800,000 pre orders which I believe is a record for a sports franchise beyond Madden.  The game feels much of the same to me, a lot of new fighters and a new single player mode where you actually have fun growing your fighter from a rookie to champion.  Maybe I was expecting more due to all the hype about the game “feeling” so different from last year, but after playing a few hours I could safely say if I never played it again I wouldnt mind.

Perez Hilton debuted a new Video Blog today called Goss ‘n’ Sass

After a rumored buyout of PerezHilton.com for $20 million I expected Perez to sit back and count his millions, but instead he is debuting a new video blog called Goss ‘n’ Sass centered around whats going in the Celebrity world with @adriannacosta.  You can watch the first episode here, I’m curious as to what the plan is for this video blog.  Constantly these things fizzle, the production costs, the time to film them and do retakes to get it right then there is making it go viral.  Perez does not allow embedding of his videos hoping on direct traffic, but I doubt something like this would go viral.  He simply is not that charismatic and his sense of humor is somewhat lacking when it comes to general comedy.  Also at the end he said tweet him with the hashtag #gossnsass which from the looks of it isn’t exactly setting the world on fire.  So the question is how long will this project last.  Judging by early response I’ll say 4 weeks totaling 4 episodes.

THQ, Best Buy and the UFC come up with one heck of a multi channel marketing campaign

In case you hadn’t seen the TV Commercial for the new UFC Undisputed 2009 Video Game with the LL Cool J “It’s Time for War” song in the background the UFC and THQ launched their new video game projected to sell 2 million units over the next 9 months.  Now the game is shockingly good according to metacritic garning an 85, but whats really surprising is all the clever marketing that THQ, Best Buy and the UFC have done for this title.

1.  Site takeovers on IGN and ESPN advertising the game showing in game video as well as banners and 300 x 250 ads.

2.  Best Buy decided to give everyone a free UFC DVD and $10 Best Buy gift card simply for buying the game!  That is a $25 dollar value for a $60 game and it is something that ensures the person will return to Best Buy to buy something else and it ensures that the UFC gets more of their brand out there.  However Best Buy wasn’t done there as a special bonus the first printing of the game included $10 off your next UFC Pay Per View purchase.

Talk about genius.  Most likely the person buying the game has seen a UFC Pay Per View before, but now they have even more incentive to purchase one in the future being that they will save $10 on the usual $44.95 event.

3.  Leveraging an active internet connection on the game consoles to promote the next UFC Pay Per View!  Thats right as you are playing the game and watching replays of fights, the game leverages your internet connection to download artwork to promote the next pay per view coming up by the UFC!  They place small advertisements in the corners of the screen during replays and place graphics on the fight mat while you are playing.  Below are screenshots advertising UFC 99 Franklin versus Henderson.

This to a true multi-channel ad campaign and should not be over looked by other brands especially those looking to target the valuable 18 to 34 year old male.

Is there a correlation between video games releases and stock prices?

Everyone who is playing the market lately is just looking for gains.  Small or Big in this economy large gains have been tough to come by.  In the video game world it seems like game companies’ stock prices may be linked to particular video game releases.  Let’s take a look at THQ

THQ

THQ has been in some financial trouble lately losing 192 million dollars last quarter.  But their silver bullet lately has been the launch of their first UFC title UFC Undisputed 2009.  I’ve written about this title before about how I think it is the next Madden franchise as the plan is to release a new version every calendar year.  Initial projections on this title are having it sell two million units by end of 2009.  So how has the THQ stock reacted to the release of UFC Undisputed 2009?

Well since the launch of UFC Undisputed THQ’s stock as risen nearly 20%.  The day the game launched the stock moved an astounding 16%.

THQ's stock price

Total gain since the launch of UFC Undisputed pegs it at 24%.  Not too shabby.
